4 photocopied items consisting of an obituary from the Newport Journal, 2 clippings, and a 23p. biography written by S.A.M. Washington concerning the life and times of the businessman and public figure, George Thomas Downing. A native of New York, Downing was active in anti-slavery work and an able orator for the cause. He was a candidate for the state legislature in 1887, one of two blacks so nominated.
